@ 6:00 pm

**Due to high tide on this date, we’re pivoting from Corona Del Mar to Newport Beach.

Join the Redlands Camera Club for a hands-on field trip and photo walk at Balboa Pier. Bruce Herwig will be sharing tips and tricks on capturing quality landscape images at the beach, including composition, exposure, and how to work with the changing light at sunset. He will also be providing hands-on assistance with gear and other technical issues.

We’ll meet at 6:00 pm at Balboa Pier Parking Lot 1, 2 Washington Street, Newport Beach. Park here and walk a few steps to the sand. Sunset is at 7:30 pm. We’ll plan to shoot until about 8:00 pm.

The pier makes a strong subject. Plan on leading lines down the beach, long exposures of the surf moving around the pilings, and silhouettes as the sun drops.

Dinner first (optional): For those interested, we will meet for dinner at Ruby’s Diner, at the end of Balboa Pier, at 4:15 pm. Eat with an ocean view, then walk back to the base of the pier for the shoot.

Parking: Lot 1 is a large lot, open 24 hours, but it fills on a summer Saturday evening. Come early. Pay by license plate at the station using cash or a card, or through the ParkMobile app. Arriving for dinner around 4:15 gets you a spot well before the sunset crowd.

Recommended equipment:

  • Wide-angle lens (16-35 or similar)
  • Standard lens (24-70 or similar)
  • ND filters (a plus, but not required)
  • Sturdy tripod

Hope to see you there!
