In-Person and Zoom Meeting – Cheryl Wilcox

From Simple, Single Images to More Advanced Works of Art. Nightscape photography is a subgenre of landscape photography, which, as it sounds, involves capturing images of compelling landscapes at night. Nightscapes convey the coupling of the terrestrial and the celestial. A nightscape image will often include elements of the night sky, such as the Milky Way, stars and constellations, meteor showers or lunar eclipses as a backdrop to the featured foreground element.

The goal of the nightscape photographer is to capture our place in the universe with a wide-field shot of a celestial object or event suspended above a subtly lit Earthly scene. Nightscape photography is all about finding the balance between the Earth and the stars in a way that results in a final image that shares the photographer’s artistic vision. Good nightscape images draw in the viewer and often tell a story. During my presentation, I hope to share some basic information about nightscape photography to help you plan your outing, how to take the images you need, and provide some tips on how to edit your images.

Visitors are always welcome.

Both our In-person and Zoom meetings open at 6:30 pm for a social time before the presentation.

Presented by Cheryl Wilcox

Cheryl Wilcox is a longtime member of the Riverside Astronomical Society where she currently serves as the Chief Observer. She is also part of the outreach team. Cheryl taught middle school science in Yucaipa, CA for 33 years. Since retiring, Cheryl’s main focus has been on Milky Way photography. A life-long learner, she has enjoyed the opportunity that retirement has provided to learn more about nightscape photography, getting out for some “star therapy” whenever she can to capture the night sky against various landscapes in and around Southern California. This spring and summer, she’ll be working to incorporate hydrogen-alpha data into her nightscape images. In addition to nightscape photography, Cheryl is an astrophotographer, capturing images of nebulae and galaxies through her telescopes (mostly from her backyard). She also dabbles with creating Milky Way timelapse videos.
