Zoom Meeting – Thibault Roland
The Joy of Symmetry in Documenting & Creatively Re-Imagining the Natural & Constructed Environment
Discover how less can truly be more in this inspiring lecture on minimalism in fine art photography. We’ll explore how stripping an image down to its core elements—light, form, texture, and space—can create powerful, emotionally resonant photographs that linger in the viewer’s mind. Through visual examples and practical insights, you’ll learn how to compose with intention, use negative space effectively, and see everyday scenes with a minimalist eye. We’ll also explore how minimalism can serve as a storytelling tool, allowing mood, silence, and subtlety to take center stage.
This lecture will touch on key techniques—like long exposure, monochromatic palettes, and isolation of subject matter—and how they enhance simplicity and impact. Whether you’re photographing nature, architecture, or abstract forms, you’ll gain new ways of seeing and creating that elevate your work. Ideal for photographers of all levels, this session is a chance to slow down, observe with greater clarity, and refine your visual voice. If you’re looking to create more intentional, expressive images and explore the quiet strength of minimalism, this lecture is for you.
Zoom meeting opens at 6:30 pm for a social time before the presentation. Visitors are always welcome.Thibault Roland
Presented by Thibault Roland
Originally from France, Thibault learned film photography as a teen. He became serious about photography in 2009 as he was finishing his PhD in Physics. He is a professional Fine Art photographer and educator specializing in Black and White photography, with a preference for landscapes, seascapes, and architecture. His background in optics and the rigorous scientific approach that he learned along the years have allowed him to experiment and carefully build his portfolio of techniques with the goal to create images that are both unique and poetic. Thibault Roland loves teaching techniques such as long exposure, infrared, and tilt/shift photography. He currently lives in Portland, Oregon with his amazing wife Clara (his words, not mine), and their mischievous puppy, Skye.
